In the province of Fujian, China lies a county known as Xiapu (霞浦), which is also themed as the Shangri-La on the Sea.

Worthy of this name, Xiapu has the longest coast line in Fujian and the largest mudflat in China. She is famous for her picturesque mudflat, which lures many tourists and photographers to witness her beauty. Its breathtaking morning scenery makes it one of the best places to see sunrise. Photographs taken of Xiapu are like art pieces.

Before embarking on our photography session in Xiapu, we first bring you to witness UNESCO World Heritage site of Fujian earth building (土楼). Now, you have probably seen pictures of earth building, how about seeing it for yourself?

After witnessing the unique architecture of earth buildings, I believe you can’t wait to go for more. In Xiapu, you will get to learn from local photography teacher on how to take amazingly beautiful pictures of Xiapu. It is a wonderful opportunity and experience to learn tips and tricks from the teacher who is very familiar with the places around Xiapu. You can be sure with locals accompanying us, we will be bringing you to vantage positions at different time of the day for best photo-takings opportunities.

This is a trip made especially for shutter bugs. It is not every day that you get the opportunity to travel with fellow photographers and to learn from each other. Remember, you have to be there to witness for yourself. :)

  • Along the bank of a clear brook that flows through the entire village, there are more than 20 earth buildings, each of different shapes. Another major attraction is Zhang’s Clan Ancestral Hall which is listed among the key culture relics protected under national level.

Day 2 (27 Oct): Tianloukeng Tulou (田螺坑生土楼群) – Yuchanglou (裕昌楼) – Shunyulou (顺裕楼) – Hekeng Tulou (河坑土楼群) – Nanjing (南靖)

  • Huaiyuanlou (怀远楼)After breakfast, we start our journey of exploring the earth buildings. We first visit Tianloukeng (田螺坑土楼) (literally “Snail Pit” Village) Earthen Building Cluster, a national protected cultural site inhabited by hundreds of Hakka people of Wong family. Tianloukeng consists of five tulous with a square “BuYunLou” at the center, surrounded by three rotundas tulous and an oval tulou, forming a pattern of “four dishes and a soup” (四菜一湯). This is one of the most magnificent and well-preserved Hakka castle in the area.
  • Next, visit Yuchanglou (裕昌楼), a five-storey tulou built in 1308 Yuan dynasty by the Liu family clan and is one of the oldest existing tulou. Yuchanglou has been nicknamed the “zigzag building” (“东倒西歪楼”) for its tilted pillars that zigzags left and right. It was built that way due to an error measuring the building materials. In spite of this apparent infirmity, this tall tulou withstood 700 years of natural elements and social turmoil.
  • After lunch, visit Shunyulou (顺裕楼), a circular four-storey building with just one ring. Built in 1945 by Zhang family, it has the longest outer diameter (74.1m), among the single donut-type Tulou houses with an inner corridor.
  • Our last stop of the day is to visit Hekeng Tulou (河坑土楼群). Located in Hekeng Village, Hekeng Tulou is an extremely extensive and impressive cluster consists of 27 earthen houses. We can also climb to a higher point to have an overall view of Hekeng Tulou cluster during sunset.

  • After Huazhu, transfer to Yangjiaxi (杨家溪) for some ancient banyan tree photo-taking in the picturesque old banyan tree forest. Some of the banyan tree has more than 800 years of history. Under the shine of sunrays penetrating through the forest, the whole scenery seems to be like an oil painting.
